UPDATED with review: JUNEBUG PREMIERES SAT AUG 3 on Hallmark Channel

UPDATED REIEW:

The setting of Seattle but filmed in Vancouver, Canada was appropriate yet lackluster really. The occasional murals and the coffee shop were a nice added touch.

From my point of view this wasn’t any specific trope other than having a Meet Cute where Juniper knocks paint all over Alex’s mural in progress with perhaps a slight whiff of a Grumpy/Sunshine. The plot revolves around adult Juniper confronting herself via her younger imaginary counterpart with the realization that she hasn’t accomplished any of her childhood wishes in life. That’s basically everything there’s not much more to it. I did enjoy her having the childhood friend “Katydid” and I feel like they dropped the ball and could have added more to the story about Junebug and Katydid at a later point.

Autumn Reeser has a quiet brilliance to her acting. Alex O’Connell played the perfect almost “Grumpy” artist. All the characters were authentic and appropriate. I especially enjoyed Mila Jones as little Junebug, Cheyenne Rouleau as Kate and Donia Kash as the barista Mikah.

The conflict itself was left for the very end of the movie and was very blasé. The resolution using a reverse version of the scene from Say Anything was cute as was the movie.

Junebug

When an 8-year-old version of herself starts appearing to her, Juniper (Reeser) begins to realize that her life is not what she had hoped it would be as a child. Young Junebug pushes Juniper to achieve her dreams, to start writing again, and to collaborate with the cute artist Alex (O’Connell) that she recently met. Despite work challenges, she connects with Alex on a personal level and pushes past insecurities about her writing to try and get her life back on-track.

Junebug is from Province Pictures Inc. Antonio Cupo and Autumn Reeser are executive producers. Stephen Harmaty serves as producer. The film is directed by David Weaver from a script by Summer Isreal Johnson. Mila Jones portrays Young Junebug.
